As part of our ongoing series about how the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) impacts your community, this week’s article focuses on donor impact. John Van Tryp shares his inspiring story.
“We first heard about CFSEA around 2000. A family member was on the central board in Medicine Hat,” he says. “We became donors when I joined the board. Having served on various community boards and projects, we realize our contributions, when combined with others can make a difference for our community.”
The impact is, indeed, significant. According to CFSEA’s latest annual report, during the last fiscal year, 255 grants were distributed with a value of $946,344. Those grants included community, designated, agency, donor advised, scholarships, and more.
“Our household supports the 40 Mile Philanthropy Fund and the St. Michael’s School Funds,” Van Tryp continues. We’ve chosen these as they support our community. Donations enhance resilience of communities by providing resources which strengthen various causes leading to community well-being. It’s a source of funds for local organizations which don’t necessarily qualify for any other funding. It enhances offerings to local associations to improve quality of life for members of our community.”
He feels that giving impacts the givers as much as it does the recipients.
“Donations foster engagement in the community, which assists in building stronger relationships among residents. These contributions can help individuals and groups in need bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. It allows us to see tangible benefits of our generosity.”
He points out the added value of donating through CFSEA, and how it provides a lifelong source of funds.
“The funds donated stay donated. This organization only uses the interest earned to grant funds to others in their endeavors. I wish everyone knew that it is a long-term method in which money will continually be available for local organizations.”
According to CFSEA’s 2024 Annual Report, “In the coming year, we’re working towards an endowment that well exceeds $30 million, pushing total granting past $1 million – and continuing the collaborative work to support the charitable and non-profit sectors as they face increasing challenges.”
