A recent County of Forty Mile Council meeting mid-March saw several important decisions made in support of community progress. Matters ranging from taxation changes to infrastructure updates were on the agenda.
Council discussed updates to the Government of Alberta Grants in Place of Taxes (GIPOT) program. Previously, the program offered 50 per cent reimbursement for taxes on grazing leases and 25 per cent for government-owned lands. Under a new policy, payments will increase to 75 per cent for 2025/26 and rise to 100 per cent in 2026/27. To address $25,216.51 in unpaid taxes related to Alberta government lands, Council approved writing off the amount in 2025.
Councillors examined a requisition from Pleasant View Lodge and approved funding totaling $193,173.97. The amount was calculated using the current assessment and requisition tax rate.
The South Forty Waste Services Commission finalized a 2025 requisition of $116 per capita, amounting to $174,116. The next payment is scheduled for August 31, 2025. Council endorsed the requisition with unanimous approval.
The 40 Mile Park Foundation raised concerns about delays in the pickleball court project. Originally planned as a two-year project due to unforeseen debris and cost increases, the Foundation pushed for completion this year. Staff will investigate options to expedite the work. Additionally, the Foundation emphasized the need for upgraded beach amenities, including flush toilets, outdoor showers, and changing areas. Council will review possibilities alongside the current five-year Capital Plan.
Council also reviewed mandatory training requirements for elected officials, as part of the Elected Officials Education Program. Staff will register participants based on their divisions to meet deadlines. Council may extend training deadlines if necessary to provide flexibility.
Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month and minutes are released at a later date. For full details on this and other meetings, click council & government link on the County of Forty Mile website.
