The company building the largest battery system in Alberta next year in Cypress County says it has commissioned the largest battery storage facility in Canada earlier this month in Ontario.

Northland Power has approved construction on Jurassic Battery facility, north of Brooks next year, and May 14 its 1,000-megawatt hour Oneida installation, south of Hamilton, is now operating. Construction costs were $100 million lower than expected at $700 million.

This spring, Northland announced it would build the 120-megawatt hour Jurassic BESS facility near Dinosaur Provincial Park in 2026 for a cost of $120 million.

Oneida is a partnership with Indigenous communities and has a 20-year supply agreement with Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator. It was partly financed by the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

Power from Jurassic is contracted to a consortium of Alberta school boards for a period of 15 years.
