The Agriculture Discovery Centre (ADC) at Irvine School is well into the season with all the animals healthy and the garden bursting with new life. On May 30, 150 members from the Alberta Chambers of Commerce were welcomed to the ADC for a brief visit. Nichole Neubauer, Coordinator of the ADC, Heather Gust, Vice Principal of Irvine School, and Shawn Yeast, teacher of the AgPro courses, welcomed the members to the site.
“Agriculture is more than planting seeds in the soil; it’s about planting ideas, cultivating knowledge, and growing the next generation of leaders. Here at the Agriculture Discovery Centre, students engage in hands-on learning that builds collaboration, problem-solving skills, and communication—essential qualities not just for farming but for life,” Neubauer told the audience. “By working together to raise produce, care for animals, and understand the food cycle, students gain real-world experience that connects them to Alberta’s agricultural heritage and future. The Centre is a testament to the power of experiential learning, where young learners discover the impact of agriculture on our communities, economy, and environment.”
Following the welcome messages, members were introduced to the ADC student board of directors, who related to the audience their experiences. The board of directors spoke about how the ADC was valuable for all students at the school where those from an agriculture background can serve as mentors for others who don’t have that experience.
The visitors had a chance to tour the facility to pet some of the animals, interact individually with the board of directors and see the garden. Thanks to fundraising efforts, the ADC now has a fully functional washroom onsite with a heated/air-conditioned storage area and this was much appreciated by everyone.
The event will be repeated on June 13 when the Alberta Farm Writers Association and Saskatchewan Farm Writers Association will be visiting the ADC.
