Brooks RCMP General Investigation Section collaborated with frontline general duty members to initiate a proactive enforcement project to target property crime in Brooks and the County of Newell due to a recent spike in break and enters and thefts reported.

Earlier this month, Mounties laid charges in two separate incidents involving property crime.

On the evening of Oct. 6, police observed a U-Haul truck departing from a secure compound in Brooks and conducted a traffic stop.

Stolen property was located in the U-Haul and both occupants were arrested without incident. Both 28-year-old Ronald Moulton and an unnamed 47-year-old female, both from Brooks, were charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Moulton was remanded on charges and remains in custody. The female was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before court on Nov. 26.

The following day, Oct. 7, Mounties conducted a separate traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by two suspected thieves.

During the traffic stop officers located a large quantity of stolen copper wire.

A 45-year-old unnamed female and 28-year-old unnamed male, both from Brooks, were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 and were both released on undertaking with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 26.

“Property crime won’t be ignored in our community,” said Staff Sgt. Rob Harms. “Our officers are out there every day identifying offenders, increasing patrols and targeting the small group responsible for most of these crimes.”

“But we can’t do it alone, we need residents to stay alert, secure their property and report suspicious activity. Together, we’re making it clear that crime has no place here.”
