The Bow Island Legion is ready to hold its annual November 11 Remembrance Day ceremony at 10:15 at the Legion.
With a mission to serve the military and RCMP Veterans that serve locally and abroad, the Legion promotes Remembrance, provides support, and uplifts communities. The Legion’s November 11 ceremonies have become a vital way to “never forget” those who ensure our freedoms, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Some of their stories can be read at https://legion.ca/remembrance/remembrance-day.
The roots of the Royal Canadian Legion date back to 1915, when returning soldiers needed mental, financial, and practical support. Several associations were formed to create the support that was lacking at the time, and these groups would later merge to form the Canadian Legion. Nationwide, Legion membership stands at over 270,000, including 60,000 veterans. This collective voice provides the representation needed to enact lasting change from a national to a community level. The Royal Canadian Legion will mark its centennial year in 2026.
While the local Legion in Bow Island will be holding its annual ceremony, at this time there are no other events planned for the winter months. At present, a lack of volunteers has put a (hopefully short-term) hold on event planning. Additionally, with only one bartender, the Legion’s bar is not able to open on some Saturdays.
This is your chance to volunteer! Applications can be filled out at the Legion or online. Those who volunteer with the Legion become part of a larger voice that advocates for the rights and well-being of veterans and their families.
The service of veterans is why we enjoy our rights and freedoms today. Plan to attend the ceremony at the Bow Island Legion on November 11 at 10:15 am and consider becoming a volunteer.
