As 2025 drew to a close, just hours before the clock ticked over to 2026, Premier Danielle Smith’s office issued a surprising press release. The Honourable Rebecca Schulz announced her resignation from cabinet, effective January 2. Alongside this news came a shuffle in key roles: MLA Grant Hunter was named Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, and MLA Justin Wright was appointed Chief Government Whip for the United Conservative Caucus.
For residents of Southern Alberta, Justin Wright is a familiar name. Since being elected as the MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat in May 2023, Wright has been a visible and active member of the community. A family man and small business owner, he’s known for coaching local hockey, working with charities, and serving as president of the Spectrum Festival.
Wright has always ensured he kept his finger on the steady pulse of the community, meeting people where they are and being an active participant in sharing their stories, needs, wants, and concerns at the Legislature. His passion for his political and community work is evident in his willingness to take issues head on, be accountable, and to connect with local media. Wright’s hands-on approach to community engagement has earned him a reputation as a leader who listens, acts, and connects, and all these were key reasons behind his appointment as the Whip.
Although, he does admit – the appointment was a surprise!
“A couple of days before the swearing in, I got the phone call,” he says. “It was a great honour and a bit of a surprise. I’m really thankful for the trust that Premier Smith has placed in me to deliver on this role.”
Before accepting, Wright took time to discuss the opportunity with his family.
“As a father of three young children, maintaining a work-life balance is always a priority,” he explains. “We had to factor that into the decision, but ultimately, it’s an exciting opportunity to serve both my community and my colleagues in caucus.”
When asked to describe his new responsibilities, Wright outlined the nature of the role.
“It’s a lot about caucus management. The Whip oversees the staff that supports all elected members, works with the caucus director to manage budgets, ensures attendance for votes, and resolves any interpersonal issues that may arise. It’s a position based on problem solving.”
Wright emphasized the importance of stability and communication within the caucus.
“It’s about gauging the mood of private members on certain bills and ensuring the legislative process runs smoothly. It’s a role that provides stability and ensures committees and legislative offices are functioning effectively.”
Despite the added responsibilities, Wright assured constituents that his role as MLA remains unchanged.
“You can’t be a Whip without being an MLA,” he notes. “My focus will still be on serving the people of Cypress-Medicine Hat, alongside my parliamentary secretary roles for rural health and military liaison.”
Wright acknowledges the challenges facing the United Conservative Party, including pushbacks and recalls from various sources.
“There’s certainly tension on both sides of the aisle,” he admits. “I hope people feel they can book meetings, have conversations with their MLAs, and feel heard. That’s my goal—to continue operating in a way that puts community first.”
This community-first approach has been a cornerstone of Wright’s political philosophy.
“From day one, I’ve said my priorities are community first, party second, and Justin third,” he reiterates. “When the community is doing well, the party can do well, and that’s how we build prosperity for generations to come.”
As Wright steps into his new role, he remains committed to the people who elected him.
“We’ve seen successes like the elimination of the clean electricity regulations and attracting businesses to grow private sector jobs,” he said. “We’re going to continue putting communities first for long-term prosperity.”
For Wright, the new year brings new challenges and opportunities, but his focus remains steadfast: serving the people of Cypress-Medicine Hat and ensuring their voices are heard in the Legislature.
