The County of Forty Mile No. 8 Council met on March 11 to address a range of topics, from historical preservation to strategic planning for the year ahead. Here’s a summary of the key discussions and decisions made during the meeting.

The agenda began by revisiting several matters from the February 25 meeting. Discussions will continue on developing a framework to identify and preserve historical buildings within the County. Council emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive list of these structures. The water concerns affecting Etzikom Hall remain under review. Council is exploring next steps, including obtaining legal advice and commissioning a professional assessment if necessary. The Reeve and Deputy Reeve have been invited to an upcoming Palliser Economic Partnership (PEP) meeting. This will provide an opportunity to evaluate the potential benefits of rejoining the regional economic development initiative. Additionally, efforts are underway to arrange a meeting between the Prairie Rose School Division and Council to discuss shared priorities.

Moving to new business on the 11th, a significant decision was made regarding public access to property ownership data. For years, the County has provided printed ownership maps, which have been a valuable resource for residents, agricultural producers, contractors, and emergency services. However, with increasing public demand for digital access, Council approved a new Public Access to Property Ownership Information Policy (POPA). The policy balances public interest with privacy considerations under POPA. It allows for the sharing of ownership information in digital formats while adhering to legislative requirements.

The Reeve shared updates from the Foremost Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber plans to update the business advertisement sign at 40 Mile Park, promoting local enterprises. Additionally, employers hiring summer students can access employment grants through the Chamber, providing support for seasonal hiring.

Excitement is building for the upcoming Summer Games. Pamphlets are now available at the County office, and preparations are well underway. Sand will be brought in for the beach volleyball courts, minor repairs will be made to the frisbee golf course, and portable toilets will be arranged to accommodate participants and spectators.

The County’s Chief Administrative Officer, Nathan Ogden, led a discussion on the 2023 Strategic Plan. Council reaffirmed its commitment to existing priorities while identifying key focus areas for the year:

• Roads and Maintenance: Ensuring the County’s road network remains a top priority.

• Financial Sustainability: Maintaining long-term fiscal health and stable tax rates.

• Capital Expenditures: Planning for major investments, including equipment purchases.

• Communication Infrastructure: Improving cellular and internet connectivity across the County.

• Public Engagement: Expanding initiatives like “Coffee with Council” and one-on-one meetings with Councillors.

• Hamlet Improvements: Enhancing infrastructure and services in local hamlets.

Council also directed administration to provide additional information on these priority areas and to enhance public engagement through social media and website updates.

The March 11 meeting underscored the County of Forty Mile’s commitment to addressing both immediate concerns and long-term goals. For more information or to stay updated on County initiatives, visit the County office or follow their official channels.
