Senator Gershaw School Gators senior boys basketball team have made tremendous strides since the opening tip-off in November.
The team finished third in a five-team loop as well as playing in six tournaments, which in coach Rene Grol’s mind was nice considering there were no games a year ago due to COVID.
“They were really excited and happy to get going after not playing for a year obviously,” said Grol.
Grol said the mentality was they didn’t know what they were going to be like at the start of the year because everybody was new.
“Everybody was new to high school—the Grade 11s hadn’t played last year—so nobody really experienced that high school play,” said Grol.
“So we didn’t really know where we were going to be at. But everyone was really excited to get going and our motto was just to play and challenge ourselves and try to get better as an individual and as a team. I think we’ve done that from the beginning of the year until now—I think we’ve improved a lot.”
The team only had three returning players.
“Well, by playing a lot of games and getting the guys finding the spots that they like to play in,” said Grol, on getting his players to gel during the course of the season.
“That’s the main thing is just playing the games, coming to practices all the time, so we can gel as a team and the guys all know each other.”
