The Town of Bow Island Council held its regular meeting on May 12, addressing several key topics and decisions impacting the community. Here are the highlights:

Northview Acres Subdivision Approved

Council passed a resolution to approve the subdivision of Lot 1, Block 2, Plan 9511017, and part of SW 01-11-11-W4M, creating seven large residential lots ranging from 0.23 to 0.59 acres. The project includes a 0.21-acre municipal reserve and a 1.10-acre road dedication. Municipal Reserve requirements will be met with a cash-in-lieu payment based on the assessed market value of the unserviced land. Conditions for the plan include final surveying, utility rights-of-way, and development agreements to address road construction and utility installations.

Amendments to Capital Projects

Council amended the 2025 Capital Budget to include several new infrastructure projects. These include $270,000 for the Parkview Crescent shallow utilities, funded by Residential Subdivision Reserves, and $65,000 for paving and patching initiatives supported by the Municipal Sustainability Initiative and Canada Community Building Fund. Funding for concrete milling projects will come from General Capital Reserves.

Splash Park Reserve Account Created

A new Splash Park Reserve account has been established, with $30,602.92 transferred from contractor holdbacks. This signals ongoing investment in recreational infrastructure for the community.

Policy Updates

Council approved amendments to Policy L-1-16, outlining updates to the Joint Health and Safety Committee policy, a move that continues to demonstrate the Town’s commitment to maintaining safe and effective workplace standards.

Seniors’ Week Recognized

Mayor Gordon Reynolds officially proclaimed June 2–8, 2025, as Seniors’ Week in Bow Island. This week will honour the contributions of seniors in the community and across Alberta.

Seniors play a vital role in the fabric of rural towns. They often serve as volunteers, caregivers, and mentors, sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, seniors in rural areas actively participate in community events, provide informal support networks, and contribute to civic life, which helps to reduce isolation. Their involvement in local initiatives and organizations – often driven by their years of experience in life and in their careers – helps sustain the social and cultural vibrancy of small towns.
