Larry Leipert has spent more than 50 years in Redcliff. He’s an expert in the business of the town in more ways than one.
As a business owner, he’s helmed several longstanding enterprises, including a liquor store, a storage facility and a corner store. Leipert Plumbing and Heating, the principal Leipert family business, has been operating since 1974. Leipert, his wife, his two sons and his grandchildren have all done their time in the family shop.
As a councillor, Leipert has 12 years of experience, and he’s hoping to add four more.
“We’ve got properties in town, and we’ve always had businesses in town, and we decided that maybe we should have a hand at making some decisions in town, too,” Leipert told Southern Alberta Newspapers on Sept. 23.
Since his election in 2013, Leipert said he’s been pleased to work alongside a lot of the same faces on council.
“I think, as a council, we’ve been a strong group,” he said. “I’m very much a team player. I haven’t done anything myself, we’ve all done it through council.”
If re-elected, Leipert says his priority will continue to be to keep Redcliff a safe, affordable and nice place to live.
“I’d like to keep everything up, as much as we can. There’s not an abundance of money, because we are quite frugal,” he said. “We can’t have everything.”
Still, Leipert says, the amenities the town offers, such as the trails, recreational facilities and the skate park, are worth protecting.
“They may not be what some bigger towns have, but we keep them in pretty good shape.”
In addition to his business ventures and his council service, Leipert has found various other ways to be involved in the community: through the Red Cross, his church and various minor league sports boards. It’s a tradition of community service he wants to carry forward.
“I’m looking forward to serving the people for another four years,” he said. “I’ll do the best I can, and we’ll just go from there.”
