Remembrance Day on November 11 is a time to honour the brave men and women who have served in times of war and in times of peace. In Redcliff, the Legion will be holding a service at Parkside School, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Chris Howells, Redcliff Legion Poppy Chair, says the event includes a march, a stop at the cenotaph, and the service itself. He also explains more about the Poppy Fund.

“This is a fund that serves the veterans in our local community,” shares Howells. “That includes all members of the armed forces, the RCMP, et cetera. The funds can offset a lot of things. We have a fund where we can help someone out of an emergency situation. We also offer bursaries to the grandchildren and great grandchildren of veterans to help with higher education. Anything that we can help with – medical appliances, emergency shelter, home repairs – we will do for the veterans in our community.”

In early November, you likely saw Legion members canvassing businesses in support of the fund. Poppies are also offered in exchange for a donation at Costco, Home Hardware, and Princess Auto. However, those looking to help grow the local Poppy Fund can do so anytime.

“You can come to the Redcliff Legion on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday and make a donation directly,” says Howell.

He notes that this is the best way to show support. While there are many Poppy Funds across the nation, and some boxes supplied to institutions from the Legion’s head office, funds that are donated in Redcliff directly to the Legion or its canvassers remain right in Redcliff.

Howell concludes, “We thank the donors as well as anyone who has purchased a commemorative wreath.”

Many of the rights and freedoms we all enjoy are thanks to the men and women who bravely serve. This Remembrance Day, plan to attend the service, and don’t forget – you can support the Poppy Fund at the Legion year round.
