Seven Persons School has seen remarkable success this year with its Junior High girls’ volleyball and basketball teams.
Coached by Mrs. Copeland, BJ Wisnowski, and Duane Ziegenhagel, the Junior High A girls’ volleyball team had a great season in the Medicine Hat Junior High A league. The team finished third in the league playoffs on October 21st. Their season ended in an outstanding performance at the 2J South Zones tournament held in Bow Island on November 1st and 2nd. Despite facing tough competition, the girls won the coveted banner.
With most of the team being Grade 9 students, they will be moving on to various high schools in the fall, where they will likely continue their athletic pursuits, perhaps even as rivals.
Meanwhile, the Junior High B girls’ basketball team, coached by Ashleigh Murray and Julie Waye, also achieved significant success. Playing in the Medicine Hat Junior High B League, the team entered the league playoff semi-finals as underdogs, but with high hopes. They battled their way to a victory against NDA, and then on February 6th, they triumphed over Medicine Hat Christian School in the final, claiming the championship banner. This victory was especially sweet, since SPS had not defeated either of those teams throughout the year.
This team, composed of just 10 players, ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 9, focused on developing both ball-handling skills and teamwork. The coaching staff made a concerted effort to nurture the younger players, balancing skill development with competitive play. Due to scheduling conflicts, however, the team was unable to attend the zones finals.
